Facebook

I don’t know whether most parents are aware or not, but almost all of the students in my class are on Facebook. I have talked to them about the safety/privacy aspects of it, but I also think it’s important for parents to be aware of their child’s Facebook activities. (Did you also know that Facebook does not allow children under the age of 13 to have an account?)

Want a bit of a scare? Go to this site: http://www.takethislollipop.com/    Have students enter their Facebook information and it shows you what someone can do with that information.

If you would like information about what you can do to ensure your child is using Facebook safely, here are a few websites that offer guides for parents:

I recently discovered that my 12-year-old daughter has created multiple Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, and blog accounts for herself. As a parent, this is scary because it is so hard to make sure she is using all of these things safely (and she was NOT). I encourage every parent to talk with their children about internet safety, and monitor what they are doing on the internet.

We have entered an age where our children can communicate so much more widely with so many more people. We all need to work together to make sure we send them off into the world with as much education and safe skills as possible!
